SLCC has created the Competency-Based Education (CBE) Course Designer Credential (CBECDC) to recognize faculty who work with other faculty and eLearning to successfully design and develop a CBE course that meets quality standards.
Who should earn the CBE Course Designer Credential?
The CBE Course Designer Credential is available to full-time faculty at SLCC who are involved in CBE program and course initiatives as approved by Cabinet.
What will I learn in the CBE Course Designer Credential course?
The learning outcome for this credential is that faculty will be able to create a CBE course that follows pedagogical best practices and meets quality standards.
The learning objectives for the course that will help faculty meet this outcome are:
- Define CBE
- Identify what qualifies a course as CBE
- Analyze the learners, course, context, and instructors
- Align all of the elements of a course
- Use the backward design method to design the course
- Determine student learning outcomes, objectives, and assessments
- Determine instructional strategies for CBE, resources, and technologies
- Create a high-level course map
- Create aligned, valid, and reliable assessments
- Provide students with a context for their learning
- Write effectively for online learning
- Adopt, adapt and/or develop multimedia
- Adhere to copyright guidelines
- Practice Universal Design for Learning
- Ensure accessibility of course materials
- Design course navigation
- Orient learners to online learning
- Create student surveys
- Analyze the results of student feedback and Canvas analytics

When is the CBE Course Designer Credential course offered?
New CBECDC courses start as needed to support CBE program and course development.
What is the format of the CBE Course Designer Credential course?
The format of the CBE Course Designer Credential course is similar to a flipped classroom. Faculty read materials about course design and then come to weekly two-hour meetings prepared to workshop what they have learned as they design and develop a CBE course with eLearning staff.
Who teaches the CBE Course Designer Credential course?
The CBECDC course is a collaborative effort between faculty, instructional designers, instructional technologists, and media designers to design a quality CBE course.
How long does it take to complete the CBE Course Designer Credential course?
The CBECDC course usually takes three semesters to complete. For the first two semesters, faculty meet weekly with eLearning to design and develop the CBE course. The weekly meetings are usually 1-2 hours and faculty typically put in 6-10 hours working on the course outside of the meetings during the development phase. In the third semester faculty pilot the course. There are also two or three meetings with eLearning during the pilot to review student feedback and the Quality Review results and then make any necessary changes to the course.
What are the prerequisites for the CBE Course Designer Credential course?
It is recommended that faculty earn the Canvas Users Credential and the Online Teaching Credential before working on the CBECDC. It is also helpful if faculty have completed the Online Course Designer Credential, but not required.
