Class for Zoom is an exciting new app that turns regular Zoom video conferences into collaborative and engaging digital spaces that are designed to improve the student and instructor experience in synchronous, livestreamed, or hybrid online courses. It measures engagement and attendance, and offers many other tools, such as analytics, to improve instruction.

This guide is meant to help instructors set up the Class for Zoom app, which is necessary for it to be able to function in Canvas. Students will need to download the app as well, and we recommend that they do that at the beginning of the semester. We also recommend that you host a couple of practice sessions with your students prior to starting official instruction.

To set it up in your Canvas course, you will need to follow these three steps.

  1. Download and install the app
  2. Sign into the app
  3. Enable the Class for Zoom navigational link in your settings
  4. Make sure your students download, install, and sign into the app

Download and install the app

Follow these steps to download and install the app.

  1. Navigate to https://slcc.class.com/ to download the latest version of Class
  2. Install class using the installation wizard (Note: Do not edit the username or organization fields)

Sign into the app

This initial sign in process can be confusing, and some of it does not feel intuitive. But if you follow these instructions precisely then you will be able to sign in.

  1. Launch Class
  2. Click Sign In
  3. Click SSO at the bottom of the screen, underneath the key icon (Note: Do not try to sign in until you click the SSO button)
  4. Type “slcc-edu” in the Company Domain field
  5. Sign into the SSO if prompted, which will probably involve a DUO push
  6. At some point you will be prompted to allow Class for Zoom access. Click “Allow this app to use my shared access permissions,” then click the “Allow” button (Note: This happens only once and allows Class to create Zoom meetings on your behalf)
At this point, the app is set up and you can use Class for Zoom in Canvas.

Enable the Class for Zoom navigational link in your settings

This last step might seem familiar to you. All you need to do at this point is make sure that the Class for Zoom link is displayed on your course navigation. You can do this by clicking Settings, Navigation, and then enabling Class for Zoom. Don't forget to save.

Refer to the following guide for more information:

Make sure your students download, install, and sign into the app

The process that students go through to download, install, and sign into the app follows the same steps that you used. We've created a student version of this guide, and we recommend that they download the app as a part of their orientation, and have at least one practice session before starting official instruction.
